Didn't quite know how to phrase the subject line but here's what I'm looking
for in a nutshell is - remote control of a PC with file transfer
capabilities. Presently using RealVNC v4 and it works great but..... sure
would like to be able to transfer files.

Commercial products such as pcAnywhere (for XP version) cost a bit much
($200) for this particular use. WinShadow ($39) is still stuck on version 2
with a promise of the file transfer bug being fixed but it's been since Oct
2003 and nothing yet. Both RealVNC and WinShadow have clipboard transfer
capability but it's only for text and you cannot copy a file and xfer it
that way.

Anyone aware of some other software that will do this? The PC's use WinXP
and there's a broadband connection (cable) at both ends of the link.

As usual, I appreciate your help and the time you take to respond.

Thank you,

Bob S.

UltraVNC will transfer files, but I've never used it, so can't say if it's
any good:

Bob,
I just found out today that MSN Messenger has this capability. I have
not seen it in operation, but I was told that it ran quite nicely.

D'oh... ! Boy do I feel stupid. Two variants I knew about but didn't bother
to read the fine print I guess.

Great suggestions guy's and I'll check'em out. Haven't a clue as to how I
missed the Ultra and TightVNC versions, must have been thinking that if
RealVNC couldn't do it, then the variants can't either. As for MSN
Messenger, I would have never given that one a thought - I'll take a look.

Thank you all,

If you're using XP, do you have some reason not to use the built-in
Remote Desktop Connection? I've used various VNC distributions for a
long time, including UltraVNC, which includes file transfer
capabilities, but I prefer the Windows Remote Desktop.

Andy....................

Andy,

Good observation. I gave the short version of the whole situation. This is
for a small business where the owner would like to be able to access the 5
systems at his shop from home for various reasons. While 3 of the systems
are XP Home, two of the older systems he has have Win98SE. Also, it's my
understanding that the XP Remote Assistance feature only works if one of the
systems is the XP Pro version.

But thanks for your suggestions and time... that's what makes this a great
group.

Ah, I understand. Yes, the five machines at the shop would have to be XP
Pro. Microsoft has free client versions of Remote Desktop for all
Windows OSs, but you can only connect to machines running XP Pro.

I like UltraVNC <http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/> quite a lot. We chose
it for use at our help desk to assist 200+ employees. (Remote Assistance
doesn't work well in our circumstances.) Part of the reason we selected
it over other distributions was the fact that it has file transfer
capabilities. I belive they've enhance the file transfer in the latest
release, but I haven't installed it yet to try. I think the major
enhancement there was the ability to transfer whole directories at a
time, not just single files. The other thing that we thought would be
useful is the built-in chat capability. We've found that not as useful
as hoped, since you can't simultaneously have the chat window open and
work remotely.

Andy....................

Andy,

Just got it loaded on two test systems and UltraVNC works like a champ - so
far. Tested between a WinXP Pro and a Win98SE box and the file/directory
transfers worked nicely.

Thanks to all that suggested this - another problem solved using
freeware....

Bob S.

Yorek,

Having just loaded it onto some Win98SE and WinXP boxes and testing it - I
agree that the file transfer function works nicely. Only problem I've noted
so far was a glitch when trying to use the Chat function. Couldn't get it to
work in a Win98SE to WinXP link. Didn't spend anytime trying to figure it
out yet but the main problem has been solved.
