I'm looking for a freeware proggie that will allow me to put a caption
in a JPEG for all the pictures in a directory.

For every trip or event I want to put the date and event in the
pictures. It would be nice th have an outline font so that the
comment will still be visible if the text color matches backrgound.

Thanks
Mike

Second try failed, too. I looked in the default directory, but
nothing three. It didn't change the original files, either.

I'll name with a unique file name and do a comprehansive search on my
hard drive.

I found it.: I had to add the files to the box on the left. I guess
I now have to know how many pixels wide my picture is. I'll get it
right, I suppose.

Thanks again
Mike

After many tries I find it's probably impossible to do this without
reading the entire manual in Ifran. In other words, It's not
intuitive.

Sorry -- On to Photodater to see what they have to offer.

Photodater doesn't allow comments. I haven't used it yet, though. I
did d/l it and ran it to the first step. I used up all my time on
Ifran. I'll play with it (the program ;-) later.

Thanks,
Mike

I dated a photo but I can't get a background color and the "bottom
right" runs it off the picture.

22-point text was too small so I tried 72-point and no text shows up.

I'm back to square one.

Thanks anyway,
Mike

Two people suggested a solution which I appreciate, but they aren't
"really simple." Anyone else have any ideas?

I was thinking of a block I could move on a graphic of the picture,
fill in the text, add a date and press OK and the whole directory
would have that text at that location with my background color and a
text and font color that I want.

The solutions suggested forces me to try many locations to see if the
text fits and is in the right spot.

Well in the box where you put the date put a comment after the date!
It does allow it because thats what i do!
Some thing like 22/07/06 this is us on the beach etc

I'll try that. I didn't do it before because the proggie prompted me
to enter the date a (something like) YYY/MM/DD, so it didn't occur to
me to put text in theren also,

I was looking at XnView. The batch processes but it only worked on
one picture and wouldn't do any more. I tried it several times and it
wouldn't even change the one it changed before when I changed the
parameters.

I too find Irfanview's captioning to be just about impossible to use.

Does Picture-Shark do what you want?

That's pretty good. I have Irfan, XnView, FastStone installed, so
I've tried them all. Fastone doubles the picture filesize. I like
the live locator, the box, the colored text, etc. I'll use Fastone.
Thank you for responding.

I'll put in a request to allow Exif date without time to be added.

ImageMagick can do that, but I found it pretty difficult to get all
the options right to get it looking just like I wanted.

I found it rather difficult (nope - impossible) to find a copy of the
program. Not being a programmer I'm not familiar with Visual Studio
and Visual Basic and other things like that. Thanks for the lead
anyway.

No, that's for embossing pictures (logos) on other pictures.
I just want a simpe text line or two with the Exif date.

Fastone almost does it. Irfan could have made it but it's too kludgy.

You can download the latest ImageMagick here

ImageMagick-X.X.X-X-XXX-windows-dll.exe (Dynamic at 16 bits-per-pixel)
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php#windows

ImageMagick is set of commandline programs.
