I have visited Kelly Theriot's web site and followed her instructions for
creating a pagefile.sys file, which did not solve my problem. In the
pagefile section she refers to the Microsoft article, Q 315270, for
additional help. When I visit that page, under Resolution, and I get to
step 4, there is no "File menu" in the System Properties window the previous
steps have led me to. Where will I find the "File menu" in order to get to
the specified "Security tab" mentioned in this step?

Dear Shaun:

From your note I infer that you have visited this web page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];315270 Indeed, the
information in that page is not complete. There is no "Security tab" in your
drive´s properties because you are not using NTFS fully. This is a Windows
XP installation default and should therefore have been mentioned in the
article. To correct this, go to Start / Control Panel / Folder Options.
Click the "View" tab. Under "Advanced Settings" you should clear the check
box in front of "Simple file sharing (recommended)".

Is there an Intel CPU / chipset in this PC? If you reinstalled XP,
without first deleting the Intel Application Accelerator, then this may
apply...

Open Control Panel|ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. If that item is shown, remove it.
Things should improve immediately.

Then go to the following URLs, read carefully, and install the latest I.A.A.

That choice is not available in XP home (normal boot), it seems.

Andre:

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I am using XP Home, and your solution
appears applicable only to XP Pro.

The problem I'm trying to address is that XP does not create the
pagefile.sys file - no matter what. It SAYS it does, but upon reboot, the
error message always returns, saying the pagefile is missing (which it is).

Do you have another solution for this issue?

Try this: Start menu, settings. control panel, system properties, advanced,
performance, advanced, (at the bottom) virtual memory, change, system
managed size, srt, OK, apply, OK, etc. probably a reboot. This will create a
pagefile.sys file. HTH

Shaun:

Well this points to even more inconsistencies in the KB article, because it
clearly states that it does apply to XP Home.

Solving this particular problem may be difficult from here, but I can
suggest to try to move the page file to a different partition / volume.
Permissions won´t be a problem for FAT32 so that would be one possible
solution. Also, you may inform Microsoft that their KB article is not
correct in your case.

Thanks, but I have tried that many times, and I'm now well past that. No
matter what, XP Home will not create the pagefile.

You tried the suggestion made in my earlier post?

I have never reinstalled XP, if that's the previous post you're referring
to. It is still the original XP Home that came w/ the system from Gateway.
However, I am about to resort to that (reinstalling XP).

If all else fails, and even if you have not reinstalled, look in Control
Panel|ADD/REMOVE. If the I.A.A. is listed, try the suggestion.

Those instructions are for Pro. You can follow them if you log on in safe mode in Home..
