Really annoying selection problem

Everyonce and a while access gets on this stupid trip where anything you
click, it automatically selects. And ify ou try to arrow over, you don't get
a cursor, just a selection of text that you DONT want because if you type,
it will replace it. HItting the insert key doesn't do anything and it WONT
work properly until you close acccess and relaunch.

This problem makes me so mad because I'm in the middle of taking an order,
and I need to change the address or something and I just can't. Can anyone
help me fix this before I hurt some office staff?

Thanks in advance.

I've never seen this. Are you sure there isn't a problem in your mouse,
rather than in Access -- a stuck mouse button or something? You could
try swapping in a different mouse to see if the problem goes away.

or even when I minimize and try selecting text in other programs, it works
just fine.

It's definitely an access thing. I'm entering data into forms not the tables
directly.

There is also another bug I've noticed (this started with Access 2000 and
have noticed it in XP too)

Randomly, when you enter information into a text field, the text cursor
appears as if it is tabbed over OR it appears as it is tabbed backwards.
However, if you just type everything is fine and the cursor catches up.

It is rare but just in case: Are you using wireless mouse and there are
others around using wireless mice (mouses???) as well?

I have seen Access (and other software) doing weird things when the wireless
mice interfering with each other.

The same thing happens to me from time to time on the system I'm using
right now. It's rare but it seems to be Access. I just cuss a bit and then
close and re-open the form. If that were the worst thing that ever happened
to anyone their life would be truly blessed. :-) I have had a wireless
mouse on (and now off) this system but the symptom was here long before the
wireless mouse. This is an HP Pavilion 8496. They got real clever in
putting all of the I/O they could on a single card with the Rockwell ??56
chip: modem, mouse, audio, etc.. When this thing dials the phone I
momentarily loose mouse function.

I have no wireless anything on this computer. My weapon of choice is an
opticle intelimouse explorer.

When this is happening, look for 'EXT' on the right side of the status bar.
You may have hit F8 which turned on 'Extending a selection' mode.
From Help

To turn on Extend mode (EXT appears in the lower right corner of the window)
press F8; pressing F8 repeatedly extends the selection to the word, the
field, the record (in Datasheet view only), and all records
To extend a selection to adjacent fields in the same row in Datasheet view
LEFT ARROW, or RIGHT ARROW
To extend a selection to adjacent rows in Datasheet view UP ARROW, DOWN
ARROW
To undo the previous extension SHIFT+F8
To cancel Extend mode ESC

If that's it, then great catch, Joan! I've never used this feature and
I wasn't even aware of it.

To tell the truth, I don't use the feature either. However I've been caught
by it more than once while stepping through code using F8. If I hit it too
many times or while some form/report gets the focus, it gets turned on.

Robert's question actually prompted me to track down how to turn it off.
