More than once I have opened MSAS and the application
agents have been turned off. Inactive. I am running NIS
2004 and Spysweeper BETA version, which I suspect is the
culprit.

Try this fix:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware

Let's see if that does it--otherwise there are different steps we can try.

I've done this, plus uninstall and delete folder
completely. Still it doesn't activate (or it activates and
then deactivates itself.

I too got one of those chat program trojans and have been
getting this problem ever since then. I even redownloaded
a fresh version under a different name - no luck.

Hmm - uninstall and delete folder should work, but I've had one previous
failure of that regimen, I think.

Are you satisifed that your machine has no more virus infections? There are
viruses which specifically target Microsoft Antispyware, although I don't
believe they are widely distributed.

You originally suspected SpySweeper beta--is there some way we can test that
hypothesis? Maybe by using MSCONFIG to keep it from starting, and then
doing a repair install of Microsoft Antispyware?

start, control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware

Repair.

I actually don't have SpySweeper - I use AdAware, AVG and MSAS.

But I tried to repair the installation, and my Add or Remove programs won't
start (you see the normal box, but the entries remain white)

I've still got something somewhere because ads keep popping up - but I guess
how does one repair the Add or Remove program box?
