Real time mirroring of sever off-site.

I currently have a 2000 server on-site and another one connected via a
point-to-point connection off-site. I want to have my on-site server mirror
all the files on it to the off-site server in as close to real-time as
possible. This is for redundancy reasons, obviously.

My questions are what is the best approach to do this? I do not want to use
FRS, it is not that east to configure and also it ties into AD which I found
out that if the FRS has an error it could affect the server itself. Are
their any 3 party applications that will do this? Is using another vendor,
Safeguard I think is one, the way to go.

The server also has Exchange 2000 installed and I would like to mirror that
data in real-time too.

Any ideas or advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

Zach,

There are several 3rd party products that can do real-time mirroring of
data. LiveVault, DoubleTake, Replistore. Most of these have modules to
support replication of Exchange, SQL, etc...

Configuration of FRS and A/D aside, can you point to what you have found
regarding FRS that concerns you regarding "FRS has an error it could affect
the server itself".

While researching this issue on MS Technet and some other MS related bbs,
several people pointed out the FRS works in conjection with AD and if FRS
becomes unstable or has a serious errror, this will effect the AD which will
effect the rest of the network.

Several people posted similar problems with FRS.

Of the appliations you mentioned, do you have a preference? Have you use
any of them yourself?

Thanks,

Zach,

I have both worked with customers that have run these 3rd party replication
software and the company that I work for has used both LiveVault and
DoubleTake internally (please note that I do NOT work for any of these
companies, Raxco does not resell this software for any of these companies
and my opinions about this software is simply that - my opinion).

We've had issues with both LiveVault and DoubleTake on some systems with
possible memory leaks and have run into sporatic issues with Exchange and
SQL replication. Please note that I am not the person who is responsible
for systems stuff where I work - this is just what I've been made aware of.

For what it is worth, we are an A/D shop and have used FRS - without any
issues. Although the amount of data that is being replicated is very small
compared to what others might be doing :)
