I deleted (Real Player) that came with Windowsxp home edition because I
prefer Microsoft Media Player.
Real Player still has an icon listed when I go to (control panel) add and
remove programs section.
When doing a search of all the files and folders in the hard drive, Real
Player is not found.
How do I get rid of the (Real) icon listed in the control panel in the (add
and remove programs) page?

Do a search for *.CPL files. Delete the one for Real Player. On my system
that file is prefscpl.cpl You can double check by right clicking on the
file and selecting properties. If you do not see Real Player in the
description, scroll through "other version information" on the Version tab.

NOTE: Do not delete programs. Instead, uninstall programs using Add/Remove
Programs or the program's own uninstall feature. These methods usually
perform a more complete removal. Deleting a program will leave all kinds of
extras behind.

TweakUI has an option to display the RealPlayer icon in control panel,
which also identifies the file name as prefscpl.cpl. Uncheck it. I'm
afraid that if you delete the .cpl file itself, the system might start
looking for it, so it might be best to leave it alone.

When you said that you deleted Real Player, I hope you mean via an
undelete program or add\remove.

Thank you Sharon for solving my problem and I now no longer have a (Real)
icon listed in the (Add and Remove) programs section of the control panel. I
indeed initially removed Real Player using the UNINSTALL feature however the
icon remained in the program listings section. I then did a SEARCH of all
files and folders and deleted EVERYTHING relative to (Real Player) but the
(Real) icon remained in the control panel's Add and Remove section. When
right-clicking on the Real icon only 2 options appeared:(Open) or (Create
shortcut).
Left-clicking on Open only caused the Real icon to momentarily wink and I
sure didn't want to create a shortcut!
I sure appreciate the fact that there are some knowledgeable followers in
this newsgroup! Thanks Again

You're welcome, Anne. Glad to hear that by "delete" you meant uninstall.
And yes, even when "doing it right" -- there are some uninstallers that are
sloppy and leave pieces behind as you've noticed.

I prefer WMP over RealPlayer too, but decided to keep it because
many websites have multimedia features that require RealPlayer. An even
smaller percentage require QuickTime.
