Real Player Prevents Automatic Standby Mode

On my IBM T43p laptop, I've noticed that RealPlayer prevents Windows XP
SP2 from automatically entering Standby mode. As a result, without my
realizing it, the computer stays on when I close the lid. The annoying
result is that the fan and CPU stay on and the battery drains. Worse,
when I put it in a bag, the computer gets very hot, possibly damaging
components.

This behavior seems to be a "feature" created by the Real Player
programmers. I sometimes notice a dialog box which pops ups and asks
whether Real Player should allow the computer to go into Standby Mode.
Irritiating!

I've googled, but was able to find any mention of this. Has anyone
else had this experience?
Is there a fix?

Thanks,
A

There is a memory-resident component which runs all the time. I think this is
what causes the problem. Try turning it off with msconfig. (though I think
some versions restart it as soon as the player is opened)

Other option - ditch realplayer and use Real Alternative. Downside is that
some webpage-embedded video won't play in this - but for most purposes it's a
better program. If you install this the codec it supplies will work for
WMP/Winamp, too.

There are some iTunes components like this (in both respects: resident and
self re-installing) that you should turn off, particularly if you don't have
an iPod.

It's the RealPlayer application, I think. If it's playing a clip, or
paused, it will prevent standby mode when I close my laptop lid.
