Real bad Network Problem

Where to begin...

I have a simple network. No broadband connection. A
laptop running WinXP SP-1 and a Desktop running the same
version. The laptop runs without a care, but the desktop
machine is giving me fits. Such as if my network cable
is plugged in to my switch it will take forever to log on
after a restart or turning the machine on. Then some of
my tray icons do not appear... such as Getright, and the
volume control for my Audigy 2. If I log off and log
back on the icons all appear and boots like it's supposed
to. Plus when I DO get the network working... when I try
to access a shared folder on the other machine it'll seem
like it has hung and will eventually bring up the files.
The workaround I have so far is to let it hang and
reaccess it again and it'll work fine. It seems to be a
problem with the desktop because the laptop can connect
to any network.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated

Thanks in advance.

We'll all experience the icon problem.

Yeah, but the weird thing is it's selective about the
icons that won't appear... like Norton and my Call
Notification will appear, but nothing else. And my ad-
watch will crash if the network is plugged in. It's like
explorer crashed.
