I thought that networking was supposed to be so simple nowadays. I am
ready to pull my hair out.

I can get the laptop to see my W98se desktop in network places, but it
keeps saying I can't get into it. I need to check my permissions and a
bunch of other crap.

Can someone respond with a full answer that doesn't leave anything
out? I've working on this for days now.

David, not sure if this will help... had the same issues with "security"
statements trying to get my Win98se (x2) and WinXP machines to communicate.
Read below (from bottom up). Seems that the default protocol for Win98 is
NetBeui, which is not installed with WinXP. Once I put NetBeui on the XP
system all was fine, except games that default to TCP/IP to connect, but I
could still type in the IP addresses and connect them. Other than that it
was instant with the file sharing and "Network Neighborhood" I will be
trying the other option today to uninstall NetBeui from all 3 systems so
that the only protocol option for all 3 will be TCP/IP, which is much more
stable than NetBeui.

Hope some of this saves some hair. ^_^

Or... uninstall NetBeui on the Win98 machines and just use TCP/IP for all
PCs.

Thank you, I will try this.

JUST AN UPDATE..... It did work fine, I uninstalled NetBeui on all 3
systems. Works like a charm, all 3 systems see each other and share fine.
The only issue that I seen that could make you lose more hair ^_^ is that
you must wait a few minutes. The 98 systems had to sit around 3 - 5 min. to
finally see the XP. Once they did, all was well. Patience really is a
virtue.

Well the only thing is that none of the systems had NetBEUI on them
before when it didn't work over TCP/IP for me. So basically, that
alone can't be my answer.

Let's pretend I'm forgetting one or more really stupid things and see
if there isn't a more complete answer?
