i dont have xp but I hope SOMEONE can help me anyway...A ctually m
problems are....I don't know what they are !! I am trying to run m
defrag prog. but it wont, it stops at 2% I tried the scan thing and i
wont go past 3 little squares. What I would really like to do is run m
recovery disc, BUT!! my comp. doesn't think there is anything in ther
it wont read ANY discs. So.... can anybody help me?? keep in mind I'
not exactly comp. savy!! otherwise I guess I wouldn't have all thes
problems! I hope I can find my way back here

If you find your way back here, the first thing your should do is establish
a news account at: msnews.microsoft.com. If you are using Outlook Epress 6,
go to Tools, Accounts, News tab. Click on Add and follow directions, just
do not use you actual email address. Any email addresss will do {make up
one}. Using an actual email address is an RSVP for SPAM. When you have the
account established, you can click on the Newsgroup icon and scroll the news
groups and select one for your version of Windows. To speed the search try
entering - microsoft.public.windows - in the search box.

For your defragment problem try booting to Safe mode and defraging there.
If your hard drive is very fragmented or nearly fill, the process can take a
long time, so try waiting. Try Scan disk in Safe Mode also.

As for your recovey floppies. When you try to boot with them, if your
system goes directly to your hard drive, then it is likely that your BIOS is
set to book from the C drive first. If so, you need to go into BIOS Setup
{System Setup} and change your boot order to A, C so you computer tries to
boot from the floppy drive first. To get into setup, you need to press a
key as your system boots. Which key varies with you BIOS manufacturer {F1,
Del are commone}. Usually when your system boots you will see a message
like Press ____ for Setup. Your manual or your computer support should be
able to tell which key.

When you get to the newsgroup for your version of Windows, try to be more
specfic.

First use the disk-cleanup utility,for defrag,open cmd prompt,or go
to run,type:cmd In cmd type:Defrag C:
 
Since the OP stated that the OP's Windows version is not XP and since the OP
refered to scan{disk}, I assume that the OP has Windows 9x/ME. These
vesions of Windows do not have a cleanup utiltity like the one in XP.

If scandisk and defrag both stop at a couple of percent you may have some physical damage on your hard drive. This is one possibility to consider.

You should have eventually seen a message of some kind to indicate what is
wrong - like some other program running.
Are you sure you've closed everything else down before you scan?
 
I dont know if it helps but, according to xp you need
atleast 15% free space in order to dfrag. you might need
to kill some other stuff your not using in the system..
 
May be a good idea to post your problems on the NG for the version of
Windows you do have as you may not be the only person with them.
