After reading many posts here and elsewhere, I can only conclude that my
chances of
getting a reliable AND affordable printer are about the same as winning the
lottery! I feel like a sucker in Vegas considering the clogged printheads,
chipped cartridges, extra cleaning cycles, waste tanks, and other
proprietary BS. Thank God for the Crayola 128 pack!

PS: I was really looking to buy a Canon S9000 because it seems like a good
bargain for a wide carriage printer with individual color refills. It's
running $260 shipped from some online and local shops. Now, I'm almost
afraid to buy it! My use is occasional photos, school reports (must be good
black type), etc. Nothing business or commercial. Wide carriage just
because it sounds neat. If you have any words of wisdom (or wit or sarcasm),
TIA.

Photo printers only use half a dozen colours, how wide is the gamut for the
Crayola 128 pack?

It sounds like you've mistaken problems associated with Epson's as
applicable to Canon's. Canon printers ( s & i ) series are very reliable, do
not have chipped cartridges, clogging problems, wasteful cleaning cycles or
any of the other problems you may have seen associated with Epson printers.
The only problem you may run into with a Canon printer is that it's
particular about which paper to use. Even that isn't a problem if you use
Red River Ultra Pro, Office Depot Premium Glossy or Ilford Gallerie. All of
them are reasonably priced and give excellent results. There is no need to
use Canon $$$$$ paper to achieve quality results. I recommend that you stay
away from Kodak, Royal Brites & Jet Print. Don't overlook the i9100. Unless
you need the extra size of the s9000 or i9100, be sure to read the reviews
on the i860 and i960 models. When it comes to refilling, it doesn't get any
easier than with a Canon.

I'd get a laser, if you will be doing a lot of text, and a mid-ranged
colour inkjet you can remove the head, such as canons are.

I agree with Ron Cohen. I used to have an Epson, that clogged on me
regularly. Some people that have Epsons swear they've never seen a
clog. Mine went into the dumpster, with great pleasure. I now have a
Canon and highly recommend them. BTW I refill.

something
.......and in reply I say!:

It's funny with these printers. I had a couple of HPs and would never
get another one. I have been much happier with my Epson (although I
have now had a clogged colour cartridge :-< ). Its paper feed is more
reliable. Installing it was far easier.

The clogging is with a 3rd party cart, which has been suggested as a
possible cause.

But the tough-to-refill cartridge thing is slaying me. I have found a
place that sells refill kits and resetters in Oz, but the kit and
resetter will cost more than the printer! So I buy a printer for $150
bucks and then I am up for another $150 to make it reasonably
"cost-effective"....sorry. rant off...

Others reckon HP are just great, and here am I bagging them.

hmmmmm....I am certainly not reading many Canon complaints, except
this waste bucket problem, which is apparently true, although some
were disbelieving.
