I recently backed up a ton o data from a Win 98 machine
and was foolish enough to delete the data after I burned
it to a DVD+rw disk....the disk is readable on the 98
machine but XP will not read the disk...... ;(
I have done a little research into the XP packet reading
and found out that its a different format....no Universal
disk format..

What program did you use on the W98 machine to do the burn?
Get the same program (XP version) and install it on your XP
machine.

I used the Sonic MyDVD prog. But I beleive that when
you install on Win 98 it sets up as UDF..XP has a
different format and won't read the UDF's ...At least that
is what I was told. Someone said that XP uses a CDSF file
settup or summtin like dat.

If the Win98 machine is still working, why not copy the data back onto it
from the DVD and burn a new (and WinXP compatible) disk?

Yes that is one of the very *few* things about WinXP that pisses me off...

XP does not have UDF support directly. You may need to install a UDF reader
into XP. I know that Roxio EX CD Creator and Nero INCD are two such UDF
writing utilties. Yo should be able to find the reader from them.

Recopying the data back to the 98 machine would work
but how can I get the prog to make it XP compat. Plus I
have about twenty or so disks written in the same format...
by the way I didn't mention that the disk is a DVD+rw and
the dvd in the XP machine is having a problem reading

I have little knowledge of DVDs so please bear with me if i propose
something stupid.
But wouldn't it be a good idea to record your data as ISO1 or 2?

I hope you didn't misunderstand me.
ISO1 and ISO2 are methods for recording data. I did not mean an ISO file,
which is a CD image.

If you do not have the option in Sony MyDVD to change the format of your
DVD, then it may be wisest to use a different program like Nero which also
has suppor tfor burning DVDs.
