I can not open any e-mail files with a 'TXT' extension. I thought I would be
able to do so with Notepad. Any suggestions?

If you cannot open a .txt file that could be a virus...

but to be sure ...

right-click on the file and choose open with... then select notepad and
that should do it.

or open notepad and select the file through the file open selection...

If the above do not work you should consider http://housecall.trendmicro.com

and use there free online-virus scanner

I tried Notepad and that didn't work. I'll check out for a virus but I don't
think that's the problem. I also can't open a TIF file. I don't know what's
going on. I'm operating Windows XP

Arnie... What program are you using to read email? Email files don't
normally have .TXT extensions. Are these .TXT attachments that you are
trying to read or did you use File> Save As: .TXT to save the email? When
you try to open the .TXT file and it fails, what happens? Do error messages
or prompts appear?

If these are attachments, try saving the .TXT files to the hard drive. Then
try opening them from the saved copy.

For .TIF files, try saving them to the hard drive first as well. What
happens when you try to open these files?
