Reading PST file in Outlook Express?

Is it possible to open a .pst file in Express? If no, how would I go about
transferring old e-mails?

the only program to read a pst file is Outlook. You will have to import
the mail into OE - but that means you must have Outlook installed on
your machine in order to do that.
