Hi all

I have configured my Outlook 2003 to have the reading pane off in all views. The problem is that it seems to want to run so it is periodically turning itself back on. I have admin rights on the pc and the network so I know the security settings are not an issue. Is there some other setting that I'm not aware of to "keep" it off

Jeff

No, but why do you want to disable the Reading Pane? Using the Reading Pane
to view messages is a lot more secure than opening them because there is no
script execution possible in the Reading Pane

My computer was hit pretty hard with an expanded threat (I forget which one - been a few months). Symantec said that it may have come through an adware program or the like but that there software doesnt protect against such threats. I would get an e-mail saying it was from Microsoft (or some variant), and it would come with an attachment. If my reading pane was on, then the threat would trigger before I could delete the e-mail message and my antivirus would say that it protected me from getting a virus. If my reading pane was off, i did not get such a message

Sounds like you need to install some updates for your Outlook. Also make
sure that Outlook is placed in the Restricted Site security zone (Tools->
Options-> tab Security) and that your Rescricted Site security zone is set
to default (High).
