Are there any freeware programs that will read, copy and delete files in an
NTFS partition while using FAT32?

Duel boot :)

Win98SE on c: (FAT32), Win2000 on d: (NTFS).

2000 went AWOL and wont boot, even in safe mode. Tried recovery and
overwriting the WINNT folder but no luck, so before I format and reinstall I
need to back up several files.

The problem could be in your boot.ini file located on your C: drive.
Sample boot.ini file

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=C:\
[operating systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

Of course the problem for the OP would be, how do I edit my BOOT.INI
file from Windows 98?

Can't you do what you want from the recovery console? Just copy the
files from the ntfs partition to the fat32 partition. (It's been so
long since I've run recovery console that I'm not sure, but I *think*
you can do this.)

Another solution would be BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/), but
unfortunately you will need to have a working win2k or winxp system to
build the BartPE CD. If you can borrow a win2k or winxp system to
create the CD, then you are good to go.

Another solution would be SystemRecoverCD
(http://www.systemrescuecd.org/). This would be how I would do it, but
if you have no linux experience, you'll have some learning curve to be
able to mount the partitions and make the file copies.

And there are read-only drivers for ntfs partitions for win9x and dos
at http://www.sysinternals.com.

If I understand the problem the OP can still boot to 98, but not 2K.
Start, Find, Files or Folders...boot.ini. Open with notepad. Make
changes. Or rename boot.ini to oldboot.ini then make new text file
copyed from my sample. Save as boot.ini to the same location as the old
file. Of course if you mess up boot.ini you will need to be able to go
into DOS and delete the new boot.ini and rename the oldboot.ini

good luck

Head on over to http://www.nu2.nu and build
the BartPE booting Windows XP CD-ROM. It's
a work of genius and will allow you to access
NTFS and FAT partitions without worrying about
access privileges or OS issues. PEBuilder
requires that you have an XP CD handy; when
you're done you'll have a bootable Windows GUI
on a CD -- with networking, no less. Handy!

I found, what I recall is a dos-shell based TSR that allows basic read, write,
and file management operations on NTFS partitions from a FAT-32 partition. The
author called it a `driver'. I found this on my computer, with some tools that
look like this, but execuatables from the same author who wrote testdisk:

The file of tool is called ntfs.zip

On my puter I have 98SE on C:..FAT32, and Win2KPro on D:..NTFS, the bios
reads the boot.ini fron C: and then you choose 98 or 2K.. if you don't
enter a choice in 3 seconds then the default OS..98SE boots.

True. But the OP had clarified his/her need:

So I figured read-only was acceptable. Also see subject line. But I
should have been clear, thanks for pointing that out.

Knew I had it somewhere, just had to search my CD's ;o)

I have a problem that's the reverse. I just bought a brand new pc
yesterday, with P4 2.8E processor, and 80 gb HDD. The drive was
formatted with NTFS and loaded with Win 2K. I also have a HDD of 8 gb
capacity which is of FAT32 format. When I installed the FAT32 drive
as a slave into my new PC, it says my drive isn't formatted, and
attempts to format it.

On my previous pc, a PII, I had 2 drives, a 19 gb NTFS formatted drive
and running on win2k, and this same 8 gig one on FAT32, and had no
problems.

The shop I bought the pc from says it is because my main drive is of
80 gb capacity, and that is why my new pc is behaving so. He suggests
I partition the 80 gb drive into 20 gb partitions. Somehow I see no
logic in his theory. Any experts here can shed any light on this?
Thanks.

Can you access the drive in DOS mode?, if so, simply copy the data to the
NTFS drive (temporary folder will do) then when Windows wishes to format it,
you can let it have it's own way, without worrying about losing anything ;o)

As for the theory you mentioned above, thats balderdash. I've got a PC with
an 80GB NTFS drive and connected up an old 4GB (FAT 32) earlier to move the
data to the 80GB, and it didn't have any problems at all.
