Reading newsgroup messages

This is probably one of those things I was supposed to
learn five years ago, but I didn't and now it is assumed
that everybody knows it. I use these newsgroups at work.
I would like to use OE as my newsgroup reader, but the
network does not have a newsgroup server. From what I
understand from my abortive attempt to set up OE, I need
the name of a newgroup server. Is there another way of
doing this? The website is pretty pokey.

To read Microsoft newsgroups, you can connect to their news server, which is
news.microsoft.com

You need to set up an account in OE to connect direct to
msnews.microsoft.com. Unless your network has blocked access with a firewall
or ISA server, you should be able to connect directly to the Microsoft
public news server.

If you need more information about OE and setting up the newsreader, try

Thanks for the link, but I have to tell you that it did
not work. When I attempted to connect to the server I
received the error message Unable to connect to server,
and the following.

Configuration:
Account: msnews.microsoft.com
Server: msnews.microsoft.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e

OE troubleshooting Help is pretty much limited to telling
me to check my spelling and contact my ISP. However, here
at work I connect to the internet through a LAN. I need
to use a username and password to connect to the internet,
so I tried setting the same username and password for the
newsgroup server, but no help there. I use IE6 as my
browser, Outlook 2000 for e-mail, if that information is
helpful. Any ideas?

I suspect you will have been locked out of newsgroup access by the LAN
configuration. Many company systems do not allow newsgroup access. Have a
chat with your IT support chappies.

Thanks for the input, all. I still cannot connect. I
will attempt to contact my company's network
administrator, but I am not optimistic. I doubt the IT
folks here understand the difference between a newsgroup
and a chat room, for starters. For now I will continue to
use the web site, sluggish though it is.
