I'm tired and I wanna go to bed...

Hey there,

*For the story below the OS's are XP and 2000, and
Outlook is XP and 2000 as well.

We've recently switched our email hosting company to one
running Exchange. But concerning the time it takes
opening emails, thoughts of taking it in-house are
rumbling around...

Which is the main point behind my question:
Whenever we read an email, it downloads it from the
server...and if there's an attachment on there it takes
even longer.
Later on, if we go back to read that same email, it takes
just as long as the first time to download it.

In comes the OST file.
I thought this would be a great idea cuz it seemed like;
You hit send/receive, everything synchronizes, then (on
top of being able to read your mail offline), every time
you went to re-read an email while online, you would then
be reading it directly from the ost file on your hd,
meaning they would come up super fast...rather than going
out to the exchange server every time.

BUT<--(I wish I could make that bigger)
But if I'm online reading my email and yank out the lan
cable...in order to read my emails from that synchronized
ost file, I need to close outlook and re-open it. Which
essentially means that while I'm online, outlook doesn't
read anything from the ost file, ugh.
This is further proven by the fact that while offline,
clicking between emails is super fast, as is opening
attachments...but...as soon as the lan cable goes back in
and my computer can see the exchange server, it goes
right back to slowly bringing up emails that I've already
read through, and attachments that are already in the ost
file.

*Now for the question!*
Is there a way for outlook to always read from the ost
file, even when I'm working online?

I've set up my own outlook with 2 profiles, one to pull
from the server as a POP3 account (which gives me quick
access to my emails) and one as the exchange account
(giving me use of all the utilities available with
exchange).
This works for me, but doesn't fly with everyone else
around here.

Thanks for reading this epic, and any help would be
appreciated.

Outlook 2003 introduces a "cached Exchange" mode in which the .ost file operates just as you say you want it to.

In earlier versions, the best solution may be to start Outlook in offline mode with the send/receive group set to synchronize periodically.
