Reading Floppies in XP

Kyle

I work in computer support at a college. I recently loaded
XP on all the Lab machines. Many students are now coming
into the office with their floppy disks, saying that they
can't access the info on their disks, they get the message
that the disk is not formatted. We'll try it on different
machines and on my machine - all of which are XP - same
thing on all of them. I never saw this problem when all
the machines had '98. I have a feeling this has something
to do with XP, but can find no reference to the issue on
Microsoft Support. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Kyle,

I read an article on the web-site of some major college that complained
about the same situation. I don't recall the details but, they gave an
explanation and a solution that would apply to your problem.

It is a matter of formatting. Their work around was; Have the students
format disks on the XP machines, take their 9x formatted floppies home and
copy to file, then copy the file to the XP formatted floppy.

Note; This is just something I read, I am not cruising for an argument from
other posters!!
