One of our laptops doesn't work anymore and I need to retrieve the data
from the hd. I looked at the connector and its too small to plug into
my desktop. What type of connector do I need so I can read the drive
on my desktop? Also need something for the power.

Thanks,
Pete

Get a 2.5" -> 3.5" converter. Power is integrated into the connector
for 2.5" drives, the converter will also take care of that.

There are two types of converters a) special IDE cables with a
2.5" compatible connector b) converters that plug into a standard
IDE cable.

The connectors I saw used pins for both sides. This 2.5" hard drive I
have has a flat board type connector with copper strips. Maybe there
is an adapter to convert that to pins.

Maybe there is. You should note however that your drive is
not a standard 2.5" drive. It may use a completely changed
connector layout.
