My friend called me to say that he can not get a PC to launch I.E.6.0
or open the control panel after installing SP2. Here is what he had done. A
coworker of his had Win98 that was not working. My friend upgraded the pc to
XP Pro. He then downloaded, installed and ran the Beta Spyware program from
Microsoft. He installed Lavasoft's Adware program as well as SpyBot Search
and Destroy. He thought everything was found and taken care of. He
installed SP2 and that is when everything stopped working. I.E. disappeared
from the computer and he could no longer open the control panel or do a
search. He was about ready to reformat.
Here's what I did. I rebooted and hit F8 after the splash screen for
the bios. I selected Safe mode. I logged on as administrator(no password
was created-see below for more info on this). I uninstalled SP2 and
rebooted. I logged into Safe Mode again. I ran Spyware, Lavasoft and
SpyBot. It found a ton of little criiters (ALEXA, MyToolBar...etc) that were
not picked up before. We corrected those and I rebooted. I hit F8 again and
selected Safe Mode with Networking. I selected the "Check for updates" in
Lavasoft as well as SpyBot. Lavasoft was ok, but Spybot needed some updates.
I updated and ran Spybot again. It found a few more issues and corrected
those. SpyBot needed to run a scan at bootup to scan and correct the issues.
I said yes and rebooted. I rebooted once more in Safe mode with Networking.
I connected to Microsoft and ran I.E.6.0 SP1. (Go to Help/About to see if
it needs to be upgraded in I.E.) I then rebooted and logged in as the user.
Tada! I.E. was now on the desktop and we could open the Control panel.
Not trusting the computer at this point I reran all Spyware, Lavasoft and
SpyBot after checking for updates. Nothing was found. I then went into Help
and Support and started the SP2 download.
I had to leave (3 hours later...and a couple tasty beverages) at this
point.
If you do not have an administrator password please create one after
logging in the first time when in Safe mode. You can do this logging in as
Administrator and going to the Control panel. Select User Accounts. Don't
use your name, ID, the word password when you create it. Be creative... Use
a word with numbers in it or special characters. Capitalize the first word
and change a letter with a number like "F1re$tone". I hope this helps you
resolve your issues.
