Each time I create a new document it is saved as a read
only, even though I do not intend for it to be that way.
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

I was seeing this with my new upgrade from Word 97 to Word 2003 also ...
turned out that the root cause was how, starting with Office 2000, how
Word interacts with my network file system.

The network file system is based on Samba 2.27 running on Linux. It is
required to have in the [Global] section of smb.conf the variable:

nt acl support = no

This discovered per some searching on Google where I found
http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/msg75443.html

You don't provide enough info for me to know if this the cause of your
problem but just in case you are connected to file shares via Samba on
Linux or Unix, thought I would mention this solution. Worked for me.
