Recently a strange problem came up with my XP SP2 system.
Programs stopped working because certain files became read
only. Rebooted, and things were fine. In Windows Explorer,
View|Customize| Uncheck Read Only. It does its things. Close
Explorer. Open Explorer. Folder, Properties. Read Only is
checked! Uncheck, Apply, Okay. Close. Open. Read Only is
checked!

What is going on, and how do I fix this?

Thanks.

The read-only attribute is not applicable to folders in XP. This is why
checking/unchecking the box on a folder doesn't stick.

As for why this happened, since we know nothing about your computer I
can only give the general recommendation to test your hard drive and
your RAM as a precaution.

Always make sure you have a good backup strategy in place and you are
using it.

Do I understand correctly, Malke, that your answer applies to folders
only - not to files?
For years, I have checked "read only" on my eudora.ini file.
It prevents me or anyone else from making changes - accidentally or
otherwise - to that file unless I first unchek the "read only" box.
And, believe you me: It works.
