I have a Windows XP machine that is being used as an HMI
(Human Machine Interface) to a PLC (Programmable Logic
Controller). The HMI programs are being changed/modified
daily. I shut down the PC for the weekend and upon
returning the next week, could no longer modify the HMI
programs.

In looking at the Windows Event Log, someone was on the PC
over the weekend (doing who knows what) and now these
files that I had been modifying are now set to Read Only
and I am unable to reset the Read Only flag under
Properties for these various files. There is no logon for
this PC; you're Administrator.

What was done to universally change all these files to
Read Only and what can I do to remove that status so I can
once again modify the files?

I would certainly appreciate your assistance in this
matter.

To make a Read-Write copy of a Read-Only file, open it and, go to
File menu\Save As\select where to save a Read-Write copy.

To change all files attribute to Read-Write:
1) You must be running NTFS file system
2) Enable Simple File Sharing in Windows Explorer\Tools\Folder Options\
View\uncheck Simple file sharing (recommended).
3) Go to Folder\Properties\security\check all permissions in "Allow"\go to
Advanced Options\Owner\if your account is not the Owner, take ownership;
select account and Apply\Accept\Exit.

If you encounter any problems when changing permissions, go to a Microsoft
page with the appropriate solution.
