Read-only persistence

Having pasted in the files I saved before doing a format, I find that every
time I try to remove Read-Only from Properties, it automatically reinserts
itself, preventing me from making backups or adding to files. Any
suggestions?

I transferred the files to a CD, and then copied and pasted them back into
my drives after the format. I then opened the Properties of each folder
that I had brought back to the drives, removed the check from Read-Only, and
then reviewed some of the files in those folders to make sure that they did
not indicate Read-Only. However, reviewing the folders that I had just
unchecked, I discovered that they appeared with Read-Only automatically
checked again.

When I subsequently backed up my files, only a tenth of the files I knew
should have been backed up showed up in the backup medium.

Where are they? CDs are always read only.

You have to click the file not the folder to see it's status. And click the box three times as an experiment when you try to do a folder. You might learn something..

More than likely User Error, what exactly did you do.

The file always shows up with Read-Only unchecked. However, I discovered (I
use the single click instead of double click method with my mouse) that the
check marks in the folders were greyed out, but if I clicked again, the
check mark would show up ungreyed. Can this be the problem?

No. The purpose was to learn that it is NOT saying it is read only. Explorer won't tell you or allow you to change read only on a folder as it has no effect - folders can't be read only. If the attribute is on or off you can write to a folder. As it is undefined Explorer uses it (as it's free) to tell it to treat folders as special, only explorer uses it. EG a custom folder icon requires Read Only (which is merely the name of the unused attribute) which tells explorer to look for a custom icon or for Fopnts folder to display with the Fonts folder viewing program rather than a folder viewing program (System Attribute or Read Only is used by explorer - System is a defined attribute for folders so except for some folders most special ones are read only).

Your problem is in your backup, however you are doing that.
