I have a USB memory stick which somehow I have put in read only mode. I would
like to de-activate this so I can edit files but can't find the option to do
this. All I can find is how to activate the security area and create a
partition.

Try going to CMD prompt.
Type CD\ to put you in the root directory.
Change to the partition you want and type: ATTRIB -S -H -R *.*/S

This will remove all the attributes so you can edit.

Some of these memory sticks have a physical lock - a small button or switch
- that toggles read only on/off.
