Read Only Links

This topic was posted in Oct. 2004 but didn't answer my question, so I'm
reviving it...

I want to link tables (Access to Access) that are read only. I cannot make
the source database read only - it is an active application. What I'm after
is a way to do ad hoc queries against the linked tables with no chance is
altering the data. Thanks!

One way would be to use an ID that doesn't have Write permission on the
folder. Since you can't use ODBC to link from another Access database, I
can't really think of any other approach.

My thought would be to secure your frontend mdb with the links; you could
secure it so that it doesn't require a login. Limit permissions on the
linked tables to read data/design and let them build all the queries they
want.

Could you expand on that? I'm not familiar with what you're referring to.

Oops, I forgot to mention that I’m currently using Access 2000. But. if
you’re talking about a feature from a different version, please continue
anyway. A version upgrade may be around the corner for department anyway.

Thanks!

Yeah, that should work, provided Mark can ensure that the users always go
that way, rather than developing their own front-ends.
