Hi,
I've xp home on my laptop, I don't know how this hapened ... my folders
become read-Only, I can't copy or create files insid any folder, however I
can create folders.
I've tried to modify the read-Only property of the folder, It seems to be
done, But the next time I open the property window, I find it checked (not a
check but like Painted).
Any help please.
Thanks

The read only attribute you see on the folder won't have anything to do with
this. Are you using NTFS? If so, check the security settings on the folder
properties....

XP just marks all folders indeterminate by default. It is a tri-state check
box. Colored in is indeterminate, checked is read-only, unchecked is normal.
The folders are not read-only and should work as normal. Just ignore the
read-only box on folders. If you have a piece of software that is having
problems writing to a folder then try to get an xp
compatible version of the program.

Most likely it is not the read-only check box, more likely a permissions
setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP does this by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:
For XP:

or for other win versions:

File permissions info:

Thanks,
But I don't know to to see/change the permissions, I looked in the folder
properties...

Can you please give me a hint.
Thanks

I am having the same problem. And I thought this had something to do with another problem I am having copying files to CD-R/RW's. When I copy a file to either type of cd and go to use it later It says it is a read only file and I can neither change it or down load it to my home computer or my computer at work. All the fiels and folders end up being "Read Only " files. It is not just the attributes that I thought indicated a read only file as yo have indicated here, but if I open a Word document the top of the file indication in Word gives the name of the file and says( Read-Only). I have used the copy software that came with Windows. Roxie and Nero and have the same problem. Yet I can copy files from my computer at work and can use them at home. I have Windows 2000 at work, WIndows XP at home This only happens if my files are copied at home. I can use a 3.5 floppy and have no trouble.

Do you see a security tab? You won't if you aren't using NTFS....but if you
aren't using NTFS, you shouldn't be having any permissions problems. Look at
the main properties page on your hard drive itself to see what your file
system is.

Not sure if you saw my post or not. The last link is file permission info:

XP Home doesn't have a Security tab IIRC; that's one of the major
differences 'tween Home and Pro - simpler (for want of a better word)
security functionality.

Thanks every one
I've read all posts but still can't resolve my problem

I've xp HOME, NTFS, I can't copy files in all the folders, i've 17GO free
space..

Any Idea please.

Actually xp home does have the security tab. It's just hidden by default.
Many of xp pro features are in xp home, just hidden and no way to bring them
out that is obvious. To get the security tab in xp home, boot to safe mode
and the security tab appears.

Or a better way is:
This is the method of choice for setting user security permission in Windows
XP Home. It is very easy to install and will bring back the Security tab in
Normal mode.
1.) Download the NT 4 Security Configuration Manager from
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/scm/default.asp.
2.) Run the scesp4i.exe file and extract all files to a temporary directory.
3.) Right-click on the setup.inf file and choose the install option.
4.) Answer no if asked to overwrite essent.dll.

You will now be able to access the Security tab

What's the error message you're getting?

no error,
- I select a file
- CTRL-C to copy
- CTRL-V to past... the file isn't past, and if I right-clic the PAST is
disabled.

Thanks for your help

Have you installed any software lately. Only references I find on this is it
gets disabled by a bug in some programs.

Hi,
thanks everyone.
I don't know how the problem occured, I've installed a windows update
yesterday...is it for this...

I've resolved it by rebooting the machine in safe mode and then rebooting
it... it works know.

Hi purplehaz:

Easier way is to copy the NT 4.0 version of the Windows File Manager
"winfile.exe" to XP Home. Works fine and is especially handy for
changing security permissions and taking ownership of files. You can
download a copy from Kelly's site. Disadvantage of using winfile.exe
is that deleted files do not get placed in the recycle bin. Probably
why MS discontinued its use in Win2000.
