A friend has been using Excel 2000 to store some financial
data and stores the data on a zip disk. He recently tried
to open the file and now gets the following error.

"'JG.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read -
only, or you may be trying to access a read - only
location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not
be responding."

We have tried several things and haven't had any luck in
getting it to open. I did notice that the file size has
shrunk from 20kb down to 4kb which leads me to believe
that the data wasn't stored properely during the save to
Zip and we are now trying to open an empty shell.

Any suggestions on how to restore the data would be
appreciated.

This is typical of a failed zip disk, or using a zip to store the actual
working copy of a file, which is a recipe for disaster. All working
copies should be on the HD; files should never be opened directly from
the zip or floppy. Archive to zips is a tenuous proposition. It is
better to archive on CD.

There is a remote possibility that on the zip disk is a temporary copy
of the excel file. AIRC, temp copies begin with ~ and have no
extension, the name is a string of alphnumeric characters. Sometimes,
not too often, these can be opened again in the host program.

But, before doing anything, try examining the disk with a file recovery
utility. http://www.quetek.com/download.htm. I think this has a demo
full use license.
