Read Only does not work

I use Word 2002. I wrote several long documents. I wanted to be sure that I
do not inadvertently change their content.

I opened Properties and checked the Read Only box.

However, Word will let me change and save these documents, without
complaints or warnings.

How can I "lock" these documents so that they cannot be changed
inadvertently, even by myself.

A new wrinkle: If a make the folder that contains the files that contains
the Word documents "Read Only", it does not make the Word docs Read only.

I guess I have to make every individual Word document Read Only. Just making
the parent folder Read Only does not make the files and Word docs Read Only.

Right?

Here is the answer, provided by Sharon F., MVP. The problem is not confined
to NTFS systems. Be sure to visit the MS support site below.

Yes, it's normal. There are now three states to the read only box on an XP
system using NTFS: read only, read and indeterminate. This last one means
that permissions or policies *may* be protecting a file in that folder.

Note: There are some folders in XP that *are* read only. Since this
attribute should make no difference to well behaved programs, Windows uses
it to add and preserve customizations that a user adds to a folder. You can
always check what existing attributes are using the command line interface
or by displaying the attributes in Explorer's Details view.
