I am trying to uncheck my read only on my download file in
the windows folder, but when I go back and check the
properties again it is still read only, the box is lightly
shaded.
I have tried unchecking the window folder it is in, but
that does the same thing.
I have adminstrator rights.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Michele

You can't so don't bother trying. It also won't tell you if it's set or not. Read Only applies to files not folders. In futture call a folder a folder and not a file.

Hello Michele,

I suggest you read this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
"You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System
Attribute of Folders"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326549
then report back with your findings in this thread of this
newsgroup.

Thank you Jan that was very helpful, basically I can
change it using the attrib command, which i have done now
and it seems fine.
David Candy your reply made no sense whatsoever to me,
but i am a bit thick, thanks anyway.

You certainly are. What don't you understand about that read only means nothing on a folder and that explorer won't tell you the status of this meaningless attribute.

Sorry, but I just don't get what it has to do with my
original question.

You have no business changing it. Nor is there any point changing it as it has no meaning idiot.

Ahhh now I see what you mean - you think i shouldn't
change it, well doh why didn't you just say that instead
of going round the houses, then i could have told you that
i wanted to try to change it because i was having a
problem with a web page loading, and one of there
suggestions was taking off the read only on the download
folder/file or whatever it is, because it DOES have a
meaning.
And i have every business changing it, it's my pc and i
paid for my copy of windows xp, so if i want to change
things, or even if i want to delete the whole lot, thats
up to me, YOU have no business telling me what i can or
can't do with my pc/software.
Jan was helpful with her suggestion, you have been
downright rude.

I explain in far greater detail for men. But I didn't forsee that your pretty little head could understand. Or did your boyfriend write the reply?
