Read-only attribute on CD "properties"

I recently copied a PowerPoint file onto a CD-RW disc and took it to
another computer to work on it. I was able to open the file, work on
it but when I tried to save it I got a "read-only" message and was not
able to.

So I went into the CD drive folder, right-clicked the file in question,
went to "properties", and noticed that the "read-only" box was checked
off. When I unchecked it and then hit "apply" I got an "error"
message.

How can I do what I want to do, which is to be able to take a disc with
files on it to another computer, work on the files, then save the
reworked files without being prohibited from doing it? Jeez, the other
computer I used wouldn't even let me "save as" to the desktop on that
other computer!

You can't do what you want. A CD by nature is read only, you cannot edit a
file that is on a CD.
You will have to copy it to the PC, edit and save it, and reburn it to CD.

Is that why I cannot alter the "read-only" ticked-off box in
properties?

Okay. So I can resave the entire reworked file to the same CD and, I
suppose nothing stops me from deleting the old version of the file to
save space on the disc?

yes. CD Rom = CD "R"ead "O"nly "M"emory.
unless, you format the CDRW for packet writing. The native XP burning
function will not do that - you need a third-party app.

Depends on the type of CD, ie cdr/cdrw
