Hi
I am having problems with editing or deleting existing
files on my home networked drive on a Win2K server running
on SP4. I have confirmed that i have the right access to
the file directory and am sure there is nothing else
running in the background that might be causing this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JD

Every time i try to open an exisiting excel or word
document from the networked drive, it gives me a message
stating that its locked and can only be opened in read
only mode. If i try to delete any of these documents, i
get an error saying that there has been a sharing
violation and that the file is in use.

What does NET FILES (executed on the server) say about these files?

I ran the command on the server and the command completed
successfully with no files being locked. It looked normal
to me (i.e. all users who were logged on the server had no
locked files)

Do you have these problems with every file, or only with some? Which
OS do you run on the client? What's the output if you run the command
CACLS for that/those file(s) a) on the client, b) on the server?

Hello Michael
Thanks for your time in helping me with this. The problem
occurs on every file, even if i logged on as an admin on
the server that stores these files! The clients are running
on Win2K with SP4. I ran the CACLS command on both server
and client and both times it shows that all the users have
full access to the files. These problem started occuring
after i had to physically remove drives from a server that
crashed to this exisiting server. Basically i replaced all
the hard drives on the new server with the ones from the
server that crashed without doing any changes to the
system. Once again, thanks in advance.

I'm starting to run out of ideas. Surely you are not saying that you
cannot edit a single file on your file server, neither from a client
nor from the server itself? So which files can you edit?

This is to establish whether MS Office is to blame or the file system:
1. Can you create a new file? (Explorer, File, New, Text File)
2. Can you open that file with Notepad, change it, save it?
3. Can you delete it?

4. Can you make a copy of one of the files that you can't edit in MS
Office? (Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V)
5. Can you edit/save the copy?
6. Can you delete the copy?

Hi Michael
Answers to your questions:
1. Can you create a new file? (Explorer, File, New, Text
File)
Yes I can
2. Can you open that file with Notepad, change it, save
it?
I can open that file but when i try to save my changes, it
prompts me to give it a new name, hence i cannot overwrite
onto the existing file, instead i end up with another file!
3. Can you delete it?
Nope, i get an error message saying that there has been a
sharing violation and the file might be in use by someone
else!
4. Can you make a copy of one of the files that you can't edit in MS
Office? (Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V)
Yes I can
5. Can you edit/save the copy?
Nope, i get a message saying the file is read only!
6. Can you delete the copy?
Nope, i get the same error message as Q.3,i.e.file is in
use/sharing violation!

Cheers

Your answers to 1. and 4. suggest to me that you have the right to
create files, but not to delete them. I can reproduce this behaviour
if I create a "Special" ACL where Write Attributes and Write Extended
Attributes (and of course Delete) are unticked.

Check your ACL from Explorer: right-click on a troublesome folder or
file, select Properties, Security, Advanced. If any Name appears with
Permission: Special, check that one with View/Edit...

Hi Michael
Sorry for the late reply. Anyway i have checked and
confirmed that i have the right ACL settings. I am gonna
be rebuilding another server soon and hopefully that will
work the first time. Many thanks for all your help
Cheers
