Howard

Hi all.

My services.exe was using 99% of cpu whenever I dialled into the net or
accessed my cd tray.

I used tlist-s and sysinternals process explorer to determine what services
were running under services.exe, and I found (what I thought were) a few
good guides to what services I could turn off without harming my system. So
I disabled three services and rebooted.

Now my startup process stops at the logon screen. I had unchecked the
checkbox under
Users and Passwords | Users must enter a username and password to use this
pc
which used to mean that the boot process could continue to completion while
I went and got a coffee.

Now my PC stops with that logon screen showing (the username and password
are there but greyed out). Booting to safe mode does the same thing.

I have tried booting from the win2k cd and chose a full repair -no
changes.

However using the win2k boot cd I _can_ get to console mode, so my question
for this ng is: how do I get the services re-enabled from console mode? Or
is there another way?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Howard,

You can use the Recovery Console Enable Command to enable a Windows system service or
driver. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:

KB229716 - Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;229716

Also, you can bypass the Auto Logon process by holding down the SHIFT key after
Windows restarts.
