Be at the computer when you activate over the phone.

Write down the installation ID and enter this over the phone when asked.
Write down the confirmation ID and enter it into the system.

Too bad the idiots at Microsoft had failed to foresee this
situation. Offload Windows XP and reload with Windows 2000
and SP4. It's OK to run an older OS if it fits all of your
needs.

In the future, should you have to go through this excercise again, there are
two files in C:\Windows\System32. They are wpa.bak and wpa.dbl. Copy those
two onto a backup disk or CD, then when you reinstall, just copy them back
to C:\Windows\System32. You will not have to go through the activation
process (unless of course you install Windows on another machine).

Although this is widely repeated advice, it is not correct.

John,
thanks, that will work probably. i just lied on the phone, and gave the
installation # and she gave me the confirmation #. I'll try it when i get to
the PC, I'm sure it will go through. thanks.

I discovered it in one of the better XP books written by a better known
authority on the subject.

Fine. Have you tried it? Please do so.

It doesn't work.

That doesn't make it correct, though.
