Hi hope someone can help me
The only way I can get XP to start is in safe mode or set
the paging to "No Paging", if I set it to anything else
the system wont start.
Thanks
Pat

Hey Pat,

What happens when you try to start with a pagefile, does it hang , or crash
with a blue screen, restart or what ? How many disk volumes do you have and
how much free space is available on each. Which on holds windows xp?

When you get the system up, even in safe mode, go and see if there are any
errors being recorded in the system event log which are flagged with a white
cross on a red circular background.

start/run
eventvwr.msc

click on system in left pane to select system event log.

Post any rececent errors. Double click on the error and use the copy button
below the 2 arrows.

Hey Pat,

Thats not very many errors in the system log, have you cleared it out
recently ?
Out of the errors you listed, there's a hard disk error, and quite a few
drivers not being loaded.

The hangs you are getting in normal mode, may be related to running without
a pagefile with only 256MB or memory, or could be a hardware issue. Perhaps
memory.

We'll have to take things one stage at a time.

First we'll make sure that the disk and the windows xp files are ok.

Boot up into safe mode.

Go to a command prompt and issue the command

chkdsk /R C:

It will warn you that it cant run it straight away, so tell it to run at
restart.

Now reboot, chkdsk will run, it will take a while, but keep an eye on it and
see if it reports any errors.

Once its complete, boot into safe mode again.

Hopefully the disk is now ok, but check in the system event log again and
see if there are any more disk errors.

If its looking ok, run system file checker to check the integrity of all
windows xp system files, and if necessary it will try and replace any
defective ones. To do this, it uses backup copies which it keeps in the
\windows\system32\dllcache folder, if it can't find what it needs in there,
it next looks in \windows\servicepackfiles\i386 (provided you have installed
sp1) and then if it still can't find what it needs, it will prompt you for
the windows xp installation disk.

To run

start/run
sfc /scannow

Do you have the windows xp installation disk, we may need it at some stage
if we cant fix it manually?

Paul

Hi Paul
chkdsk picked up a few errors, checked system log, no
disk errors now.
Tried to run system file checker, both in safe mode & no
paging (normal) mode but no go, it flashed up a screen
really quick, no time to read it, then went back to the
desktop.
Pat

Hey Pat,

The errors chkdsk picked up, did it report it fixed them ?

When you run sfc /scannow it will flash up really quickly but then minimize
itself to the taskbar with a tab labelled "Windows File Protection"

If you click on its tab in the taskbar, you should get a little window come
up.
In the window its says:-

"Please wait while windows verifies that all protected windows files are
intact and in their original versions.

And you get a common progress meter moving from left to right.

If you definitely think its not running, check in the event logs, all 3 ,
application,security and system.

You need to be logged in with an account that has administrator priveleges.

Paul

Hi Paul
Yes chkdsk did pick up errors & repaired them, but when I
ran sfc /scannow there was nothing in the taskbar, I did
get it to run from C prompt, it asked for the cd, but
when it finished the system still wouldn't start with
paging on.
SO I got the shits, backed up my info and reformated the
drive.
Thanks for your help, but I needed to get the system
running for work.
But if you do find out what might have caused it please
let me know.
Thanks again
Pat

Hi Paul
Put a message up yesterday but cann't see it today.

chkdsk did pick up some errors, reported and fixed them.
Can you acess this report latter, if so how?
Tried running sfc again but after it flashes up the
screen there was nothing on the taskbar.
Did get it to run at c prompt, it asked for the win cd
then went along checking system files, it didn't give a
report at the end, how can you acess this repost later?

But the system still wouldn't start with paging on, so i
decided to format the HDD and reload windows, it seems to
be working alright now, needed the system for work.

If you do find out or have a idea why it done this please
let me know.
Thankyou very much for your help
Pat

Oh well,

A reformat should work unless there's a hardware problem.

When it prompted for the cd, did you have one and insert it ?
