re windows up date

hi
I have windoews update install automatic but i have 8 updates trying to
install after sutdown
this goes on and on and none update even after 24 hrs
so only way is to disconnect power and reboot
Tried manually downloading updates but they stop when it goes to backing up
stage
any help would be appricated
have turned of automic update which has stoped problem
