I just dropped in at the end of this, and the thing that came to min
from the
bits and pieces quoted was that you had the indexing service turned o

Hi Husky! thank's for the reply. The whole description of my proble
was posted under "Unknow process interrupting". I had tried all th
usual remedies and turned off all sort of services like the indexing
to no avail. Re. betting sites has nothing to do with it, the proble
happened even using Notepad while being off the net and the cable mode
turned off. As a matter of fact the betting site I am using is i
Melbourne Australia called Tabcorp, (horse racing) and it is safer the
banks, guaranteed no pop ups here I tell you. I am back to 98SE now an
everything works just fine, I was fool to change op. systems in th
first place, but I was talked into it.
If I had the chance I would have liked to leave my system as it was an
let some of you boffins loose on it to find the problem, but to me it i
just a tool not a toy and as such it has to work.
Appreciated all the suggestions

I don't keep old unread messages, which is why I only caught the tail end.
But if ME is anything like win98, I'd say if you have XP, use XP. I do know
there's lots of good info in this group. And lots of bad advice. That's what
the kill files for.
XP has stuff in it that does make it worth the effort. Just an example. on
win98, defrag C:\ only with a clean reboot and the machine owns you while that
happens. Not a problem with XP [Pro] might be different with XP.
This is where I'm talking about the indexing service. It can kick in and you
just sit there attempting to wrestle control back. I'm using a 3.2 ghz P4 dual
processor, 1 gig ram, 500 gigs HD. Takes a lot to bring this thing to it's
knees. But the indexing service can and has done it. Also Trend pccillin shot
it down awhile back with one of their upgrades.
Maybe you have virus software scanning either real time or scheduled ?
What I'm figuring is that if it ain't XP killing you, then chances are good
that the same thing will eventually surface on ME. I use the same stuff from
98, on XP, and visit the same sites. It's habit. Same problems from 98, hit
this XP. But fewer. XP has lots more security than 98.
Then there's lots of other things that can do it and no OS is safe from them.
But you might try a more in depth description of the problem, if you have any
desire to use XP. ME will soon be unsupported by M$ same as 98 now is. Might as
well learn the new if you have it instead of having to jump in when ME's gone.

There's other things besides indexing that run automatically in the background.
I've heard [can't verify it] that XP also defrag's in the background
automatically. That can put a load on. Anything running in the tray takes up
resources.
My tray looks like Mardi Gras. I once had to reboot about 25 times disabling
one by one till I found what was causing the trouble. You'd think last thing
installed. or hope it was that. Not always the case. Some programs just can't
coexist like Nero's InCD, and Roxio's DirectCD. it's either or. You can force
both on the machine. And then you have problems when they both try to work.
They both want the same resources.
