Hi....

I got the following from a friend in England and for some strange reason
the 'printer problems' are ringing a vague bell.

Anyone else recognize this rather vague set of problems? Spyware?
Trojan? CWS? My mind is blank and Symantec website showed nothing re
this.

Thanks......Heather

I got a blank email from my son with that subject header, no attachment;
and, when he phoned me after my query email, it turns out that he didn't
send it, has had a complaint from someone else, is having trouble
printing, felt that he lost control of his computer for a while, and is
generally suspicious that he is infected. But he does have an up to date
Norton (I insisted on that when he got into a mess awhile back) and
can't find anything.

As it happens, when I started having having suspicions about my own
computer, I had trouble with my printer! But I'm pretty sure that my
problems involved other factors (my own self-destructive programming).

He needs to scan his computer in 'safe mode' if he is suspicious - many
of the newer viruses disable well known AV scanners. He could also use
Task manager to see what is running (if TM won't start that is another
good indication of a smart virus at work).

Bugbear/Tanatos made printers spew gibberish, but as long as the sender
doesn't give an exact description what these "printer problems" are, I
won't believe *anything*. This "problem description" is so vague, it
could be anything. Even a hoax.

Thanks "Gabby" (G)......

I will ask again.......I told him to run AdAware and he only had 3.....a
less than normal amount (but he had had a SurfingGuard proggie on his
laptop)......but his son found "108" of the little suckers!!!!
Btw.....this is a very good friend and no hoax. His symptoms are a bit
vague and he was wondering if he had picked up the new virus at
first.....but I will come back with more detailed information.

The son had been running with no antivirus......Dad made him put Norton
on. But I wonder if he bothered to keep up to date. Or like my
neighbour (who sells main frame computers), his Norton was a year out of
date......go figure. I had to take Blaster off his XP and then commence
to download ZA, AdAware, AVG, clean out the Temp, TIF and Cookie
folders.......just for starters.

One would assume that a person in the computer business would know these
things.........never assume!! 8-))

Cheers......Heather
