Re-sizing images

I am fairly new to working with still images. I only
have the Paint program (in Windows XP) to work with right
now. I would like to know how I can convert an image
that I open from a CD to a 720 x 480 resolution. Also
when an image is larger in vertical size than in
horizontal, how can I select a portion of the image and
change it to the 720 x 480 resolution. Thank you for any
help you can provide. If anyone knows of any online
tutorials that could help it would be most appreciated.

To decrease the size of the file for e-mail, web publishing etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on the file or if you see it, it may not work. If so,
do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

Also, you can download a free batch converter from here to resize pictures
and edit photos. In fact it is a great tool to have to work with images.

If you are not ready to purchase an Image
Editing program...the freeware IrfanView is
a very useful program:

IrfanView 3.85

(get the plug-ins too)

I would like to know how I can convert an image

=======================================
The free PowerToy...ImageResizer.exe...is a
simple way to resize images.

OK, go to the following link and download and
install: ImageResizer.exe

http://tinyurl.com/36n

Then you can open any folder that contains
images and you will have an option to resize.
Just right click the selected image files and
choose Resize Pictures from the menu. You
can select one image or a whole group.

The program will place the resized copies in
the folder with your originals.
(Tip: *Never* overwrite your originals)

=====================================
Also when an image is larger in vertical size
than in horizontal, how can I select a portion
of the image and change it to the 720 x 480
resolution.

Sounds like you want to *Crop* the image. In
other words...*Trim* the top and bottom and result
in a landscape image instead of a portrait?

You can do this in IrfanView...

Open the image in IrfanView...and...
Left click / Drag a box around the portion of
the image you wish to retain.
(Numbers at the top of the screen show the
image size as it changes)

When you are happy with your selection...
go to...Edit / Crop Selection.

Be sure to go to...File / Save As...and give
the cropped file a new name. This will
prevent you from overwriting your original.

Actually the best bet is to make a copy of
your images for editing purposes and burn
the originals on a CD for archival purposes.

Also you might try downloading and installing
the evaluation version of:

Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 4:
http://tinyurl.com/mkzm

It has an easy to use crop tool.

I agree and have been using Irfanview for years. Just as a point of
information; I exchanged some emails with the author of the program and was
surprised he named it after himself, that's his first name, Irfan, and he
lives in Bosnia. He wrote the program originally for himself and all it did
was quickly display images. When it was working pretty good he started
giving it away, and over the years has added a lot of features. It even
plays movies now.

Yes...no doubt IrfanView is one of the best freebies
on the net. And it's supported better than some of the
software we pay big bucks for.
