re-setting connection

I use an XP machine to connect to other machines on my network. I have
an icon to a mapped network drive on my desktop. Typically, opening
the drive after a fresh re-boot leads to a log-in screen, I provide my
credentials, and, voila, the Windows Explorer appears on that drive.

At times after going through this process, I find I need to open the
Explorer on the network drive again. However, this time I'm told that
the network drive is unavailable. Re-booting the XP machine solves the
problem but there must surely be a way of re-setting the connection
without having to resort to a re-boot?

Any info on what I should do instead in this situation would be
appreciated.

TIA,
David

When that happens, type net use and then post back with the result.

What does 'post back with the results' mean?

Thanks,

When you use "net view" or net use \\ipaddres command, you may receive a system error.

So, I just was on a videoconference on my company's intranet using
VPN. There was a barely audible 'pop' at some point and I lost the
connection. I re-booted the router and modem. I can get to the
internet and, via VPN, our intranet on my iMac (wired) but not on my
ThinkPad (wireless).

net use on the thinkpad reveals a 6118 error. While this isn't the
typical scenario in which I lose connectivity but perhaps the solution
to this would also apply to my other, sporadic connection problems.

TIA,
David

It's taken a surprisingly long time for this to occur, but the error's
happened again.

'net view' results in the following:
Server Name Remark
------------------------------------
\\DAVID david
\\MICHELLES-IMAC Mac OS X
\\PLAYROOM
The command completed successfully.

'net use \\ipaddres' results as follows:
System error 53 has occurred.

So, what's this about?

TIA,
David
