Prices in Aus for the 7150 // 5550 have fallen way down .... think will get
one to supplement my 9XX printers

Haven't heard from you in a while! You're going to be doing the exact same
thing as I am -- buying a 7x50 series Photosmart to supplement a 9xx series
DeskJet. I decided NOT to refill inks on my Photosmart. Why you ask?
Because I bought it as a photo printer, and I want the archival ability
advertised as well as the quality. I love my Photosmart printer. Buying HP
Premium Plus photo paper while it's 50% off or buy one get one free makes it
more affordable. 4x6 prints are extraordinary. I made one 8x10 (just a
test image with different colors and small pictures from a magazine in the
UK) and that was it -- turned out good. I don't want to waste ink,
especially on an 8x10 if I don't really need to print it.

You will definitely enjoy the 7x50 series Photosmart printers. I'm going to
have to buy ink from Costco in a little bit. Right now it's $72.99 (USD)
for two #56 black cartridges and three #57 color cartridges. I'll have to
buy the #58 at retail (ahhhh the horror! :0P) since Costco doesn't sell the
photo cartridge in store.

Ok fair comment about Archival aspect forgot about that :)
If refill Inks are well formulated results should still be good tho'
Have to think about it but thanks again for comments

stopped using the photo cartridge and now just use the 56/57 cartridges.
Although it's still only PhotoREt III, I find its quality is better than my
930c for photos.

Hey thats interesting that RETIII is still good {better than the 9XX RETIII}
the #58 {RET4} is supposed to excel with skin tones how then does the #57
{RETIII} compare ?

Skin tones are somewhat better with PhotoREt IV due to the many more shades
available to it -- it all depends on your personal likes/dislikes. PhotoREt
III is still good for other things, and IMO it's better than the PhotoREt
III in the older series of printers. It could be my imagination :)

I was thinking about getting a refurb'd HP DeskJet 5550 when it was on sale
for $29.99 after rebates. Their new line (such as the 5650) looks very
promising. I love the fact that you can do TRUE borderless printing. I
don't need to do full-bleed 8x10's, and HP doesn't have true 4x6 paper yet
so I guess it wouldn't be of much use to me.

Good luck in your quest for a new printer :)

Think RETIII in the new HP printers 7XX 5XX is better than the 9XX HP
printers because the drop size may well be smaller {{both supposed to
4-5picaliter}} in reality the #58 may be better at drop size than the old
#78
dont froget that RETIII is also a software control BUT drop size is
important
So PhotoRETIII in the newest HP printers should be better I think 6 colour
printing is still a bit of an overkill and somewhat complicated.
