Right-click the .txt file, OPEN WITH, CHOOSE PROGRAM,
then you will hit the OPEN WITH box. If Notepad is not
there then click on the BROWSE button to find it. Make
sure to check the "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file" check box.

You can also get there by CONTROL PANEL, FOLDER OPTIONS,

Thank you. It didn't accept Notepad even if I forced it to open with Notepad. The checkbox was also selected. It still opens with Wordpad. In fact, that is the very first thing that I tried and then after several times. But no luck.

If you go to start>run and type in notepad and hit OK does notepad
open?

Well if that didn't work then try this:
Go to www.dougknox.com
On the left, click on WINDOWS XP FIXES.
Then scroll down and click on FILE ASSOCIATION FIXES.
Download the .TXT fix and run it. It will import the
proper data into your registry. That should work.

Abel, gls858 Thank you for your help. Abel, your another suggestion seems to have fixed my probelm. In Control Panel --> Folder Options.. For file type .TXT, I was able to reset the file executable to notepad.exe. There is a button to reset the type to original type, in this case notepad. Now it works and text file is associated with notepad. Notepad.exe does exist in C:\Windows folder and it can be executed using Start --> Run

Thank you for your help.
