This article has been posted on W2k-registry group for two weeks, no answer
yet. Google search retrieved dozens of similar articles, surprisingly
similar: no answer to those posts. Here I re-post a shortened message with
the same subject.
On a computer with Asus P4B533/Intel 845 MoBo, Win2kpro-sp4, the "add
hardware wizard" of is driving me crazy. While adding four hardware to two
independent win2k (dual boot), eight installation, four error occurred. Only
one error from installing a NIC has been solved so far by selecting driver
file from disk. Other three problems remain: a Takram DC315 SCSI card, a PCI
frame grabber from Matrox, an external SCSI image processor, even though
these drivers are specifically for win2k.
The problems are the same: when installing or upgrading driver for the HW,
at the final step: "completing add hardware wizard, an error occurred,
system can not find the file specified", the hardware is then marked with a
Yellow Exclamation or a Red cross, accordingly, can not be used. Next boot,
"found new hardware" again. In worst case, there is an endless cycle of
"found new hardware, installing driver, error occurred, found new
hardware..." until I delete it from device manager.
"Can not find file specified"? Who can not find which file?! In all these
cases, the driver file is just one "xxx.sys", firmly sit under WINNT /system
32/ drivers directory, the inf file are there under inf folder. I am
confident that the problem is not caused by driver file or installation
files for two reasons:
1. the same installation may work fine on one win2k but fail on another. If
it happened at driver updating, return to previous working driver did not
stop the error.
2. if I simply cancel the wizard, there won't be any yellow marks over those
devices, the device then work properly. But I have to cancel them at every
boot. If I dared to go on with installation, I got a yellow mark and device
can not be used anymore.
The problem is not windows specific either because the troubled driver
installation happened on both windows but in different case: it works on one
win2k but failed on another or vice versa. The error code returned by
windows is nonsense: driver not digital signed: that is not lethal for
driver installation.
It seems to be a register's problem, but export the reg keys from another
side of win2k did not remove the problem. I wonder, which reg key is
responsible for this "found new HW". If I can keep it silence, everything is
OK.
Thanks for any help in advance.
