My PC is not recognising my hdd's every time on startup.
I have an external hard drive. (switched off on boot)
2xinternal hard drives.
This problem has recently begun & I pull out the ide cables and
re-insert.
Sometimes this works 1st time but often needs to be done a few times.
The internal hard drive cable is new. Any help gratefully accepted.

Start by swapping out the power supply for a known working one.

General hardware troubleshooting:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

If the internal hard drive ide ribbon cable is in excess of 18" in length,
replace it. If its not a true ribbon cable, replace it.

Reseat the power cables on the hard drives. Check if the inserts are moving
inside the plugs.

If your bios has a facility for using more than one RAM count at boot,
enable that. This will give more time for spinup before bios checks the
hard drives.

Remove one hard drive, then monitor the other hard drive during bios check.
Alternate by removing the other hard drive and installing the other hard
drive, and monitoring the one not monitored before. Be sure jumpered
appropriately in each case for single usage.

No joy. Replace the power supply with one that has more amperage on the 12V
rail.
