i have done a clean install of xp and have created several partitions. i am
now trying to install service pack 1a from the network download.

when i try to install, it is automatically extracting to drive g:\ and i
have no control over this. can anyone suggest why it should go there instead
of c:\

Hello Steve,

When you say it is extracting are you simply running the install or are you
manually extracting the files using the /X switch?

If you are simply running the install, then it is likely that your
Environment Variable or registry as your Temp folder pointing to the G:
drive.

To check, go into Control Panel and click on System.

Once in the System Properties, click on the Advanced and click on
Environment Variables.

Make sure that your User Variables for Temp and Tmp are %USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\Temp

Make sure that your System Variables for Temp and Tmp are %SystemRoot%\TEMP
