This problem was finally resolved as follows:
1. I uninstalled all sound drivers in Safe Mode
2. I shut down & moved my sound card to another PCI slot
3. On next boot (1) I cancelled the Windows hardware wizard when I got the
'new hardware found' popup message.
4. I installed the Creative Lab driver file I had downloaded for W2K -
(selecting the 'drivers only' option)
5. I rebooted & W2K played its tune - indicating my soundcard had been
revived.
6. Device Manager did not show another questionable audio device controller
under an exclamation mark.
Conclusion: The W2K installation CD does not contain native drivers for the
Creative Live! series of sound cards. No additional Creative drivers have
been made available thru Windows Update through SP4.
