folks, as you can probably tell from the subject matter - olde clever one
here went and uninstalled the PnP enumerator from set up, i can see through
msinfo32 when and where it went from but have no idea how to put it back.
would be immensly grateful for any info on how to SIMPLY put it back ( very
much a case of 'a litle knowledge is a dangerous thing' ) for me i admit
cheers in advance

Windows can find the driver for you. Start orb/type devmgmt.msc
System devices, PnP enum..
rightclick, and Properties, driver tab. "Update driver" button (roll back
driver may also work)
Restart Windows or Action menu "scan for hardware changes"

Mark,
thanks for answering but PnP enum.... doesn't show in device mangr any more
since i uninstalled it from there.
Am led to believe installing SP2 would cure it but this is a companies
notebook and i do not have admin rights to directly instal
would welcome any other advice with welcome arms tho

It would be my guess that something happened to the settings in your BIOS
setup choices. PnP enumeration is part of the S3 settings for your system,
and I am guessing something caused that to 'reset to defaults'. Look around
in the setup for some indication PnP is not turned on. (It may say something
about PCI)

And it won't show until you aka Windows reinstall it.
Reboot the machine and Windows should redetect the device and reinstall it.
Or
On the desktop Right click MyComputer.
Click Properties in the popup menu.
Click the Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
Click the pc icon at the top of the list of devices.
On the Tool bar click the monitor w/magnifier to Scan for Hardware Changes.
Or
Sometimes it may work out and others not.
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Restore.
If there's a restore point set to when you uninstalled the driver select it,
otherwise it's a shot in the dark to select a point prior to uninstalling.

If none of that helps out you're going to take it to the job tech since you mention
you don't have any rights/privileges to install.

ahh, went to HP's diag site and that suggested a bios update but no joy
getting past first post because but that requires a password which i would
suspect is the admin password too :S.

Am going to have to bite the bullet and go to IT aren't i ???:(
WOULD loading SP2 fix the problem tho, i may be able to swing an upgrade on
that

Brian,
appreciate the reply , but PnP software device enumerator doesn't show
ANYWHERE on the pc apart from within the logs depicting where and when i
deleted it. have been up and down device manager for days now getting no-where

Brian,

I looked at the different posts, and wondered if you had some words of
wisdom in my case?
I installed three different modem cards in a new computer, which did not
like any of the modems, and did not detect the third or any subsequent cards.
Is there a way to reinstate the PNP detection? Or how can I check what is
going on? It will not automatically detect any card in the (only one) pci
slot in the shuttle computer I am working on. I would hate to start over
completely and install xp again, and I am not even quite sure if that would
help.
