i upgraded to the vista rc1 and i realized i should go back to xp b/c all the
problems but when i put the xp disk in it said it didnt recognize my computer
as a windows computer

Hi,
I have been having the same problem with one of my machines. This machine
will only run the Beta 2 release of Vista and no other build. When I try to
re-install XP i get an error message that says setup cannot continue, this
happens with approx 39 mins of the install left.
I have tried this on countless occassions always after reformating the
drive. The drive has been checked for errors and bad sectors and everything
checks out fine. Beta 2 will always install without any problems on this
drive.
I am now of the opinion that to revert back to XP on this machine I will
have to buy a new drive, unless anyone can come up with any other soloution.

Try this one:

Go to a command prompt (use ran as administrator) put in The Vista DVD, run
from within the cmd prompt"
X:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Sorry forgot to mention X= to be replaced by the drive letter from your DVD

Well, I just typed the command at a command prompt ran as Administrator.

I received the following message:

"Target volumes will be updated with NTLDR compatible bootcode.

C: and then a bunch of gibberish

Updated NTFS filesystem bootcode. The update may be unreliable since the
volume could not be locked during the update:
Access is denied.

Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes."

So, the messages are somewhat contradictory. It says it succeeded, but
being denied doesn't give me great confidence. We shall see in just a moment
if it worked.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

It worked!

Thank goodness. No more Vista RC2. I am so happy to be rid of that O.S.
What a horrorshow.

I hope everybody enjoys your Vista experience without my participation. I
wouldn't run Vista if it were free. I wouldn't run it if I was paid to.
Productivity slides to near zero. It never reaches it, but it is infinitely
close.

Why did you know that?
